You will need to keep sufficient distance between your feet and keep track of your opponent and the moves he/she has made adn are making. When you parry, the postion of the blade should be closer to the your body for self defense. The main point while you are defending, should be to
always keep looking for the opportunity to counter your opponents attacks.
Make good judgment of the changing conditions. A skilled and focused swordsman will quickly analyze all the weak and strong points of thier opponent. They will then make a quick assessment of thier surroundings with respect to all related factors in the initial stage of the sword fights. The great difference between two sword fighters are not based on their skill and expertize alone, but on how well they can read the other sword fighter and thier surrounding conditions, as they are sword fighting.
